red-handknotted-wool-orh21938
Hand Knotted Wool Rug Red, Ivory Traditional Gabbeh 5x7'5''
This traditional Gabbeh rug puts classic Persian floral design onto a bold red field, hand-knotted in wool for a surface that feels as substantial as it looks. Showcased here is an ivory medallion with a teal starburst core, set within a lattice of curving vines in sage, cream, rust and dusty pink, with slate-blue spandrels and a scrolling ivory border completing the picture. The composition borrows the oversized floral vinery of Mahal and Heriz weaving while keeping the chunky knotting, thick pile and warm palette that define a hand-knotted Gabbeh wool rug. We craft each piece by tying wool yarn onto a cotton foundation by hand, shearing it to an even, dense pile and finishing with a short natural fringe at both ends.

Exact Size: 5x7'5"

Weave: Hand Knotted Rug

Yarn: Wool

Color: Red, Ivory, Black, Green, Rose, Teal, Multi

Origin: India

Pile Height: 0.5 inch

Condition: New

Condition Description: New With Tags

Rug#: ORH21938

Story Behind the Art: Gabbeh rugs were originally made by women from tribes in the south-west of Persia. Gabbeh literally means unclipped, a reference to the shagginess of the pile. Rustic simplicity and indeed a certain willfulness of design give the rugs an unaffected freshness which is most sought after, especially for use in modern decor. Original designs were very basic with only a limited number of decorative patterns, mostly geometric mix of objects resembling animals, humans (kids) or trees (abstracts), coarsely knotted with brightly colored wool. Tree designs crop up time and again in nomadic weaves. Their form is never standardized. Asymmetric and symmetric knots are often used in the same rug. But with their natural woolly texture, thickness, and extreme durability along with unique designs, they have enjoyed popularity through the ages. In modern era, Pakistan and India have emerged as popular producers of this nomadic flooring.
