Oushak weaving from western Turkey built its reputation on exactly this kind of composition, where a warm open field carries an all over botanical arrangement in close tonal relationship with the ground, producing a surface that feels cohesive and settled rather than busy. The honey beige field here is filled with a repeating pattern of scrolling vines, leafy branches and floral heads in soft coral and light peach, the motifs rendered with enough detail to reward close attention while the warm ground absorbs them into an overall impression that is gentle and harmonious. A celadon border frames the field with a continuous floral meander in coral and tan, its cooler tone providing just enough contrast to define the edges of the composition and give the design its structure. Hand knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation gives the construction real substance, and the palette of beige, celadon, light peach, coral and brown carries the kind of tonal depth within wool that shifts subtly with light and angle, giving the rug a living quality that holds interest over time.

Story Behind the Art: Oushak Rugs, originating in the west-central Anatolian town of Oushak in Turkey, are renowned for their exceptional texture, expansive design and elegant style. These rugs are made using a family of designs that originate in Ushak, Turkey. They’re recognizable for their large-scale designs and are typically based on geometric motifs with central medallion drawings, smaller all-over medallions or scattered sprays of vine scroll and palmettes. Made from lustrous wool, they favor muted earth tones and are extremely versatile.
