Round medallions and tiny florals spread across an ivory ground in this Soumak rug. The rug features gold, sage and blue-gray rosettes along the border, with a center panel of delicate flowers in mustard and slate. Seen here, the flatweave surface is smooth and tight, and peach fringe finishes each end. Hand-knotted in a flatweave Soumak technique from wool, this transitional area rug lies flat, is pet and kid friendly and vacuums easily. Story Behind the Art: Soumak rugs have a rich history rooted in the Caucasus, Persia (modern Iran), and Anatolia (Turkey). This flatwoven textile technique dates back centuries, originating from nomadic tribes who used it for rugs, bags, and other functional textiles. Unlike traditional kilims, Soumak rugs feature a unique weft-wrapping technique, creating a textured, embroidered appearance with bold geometric motifs, stylized floral patterns, and tribal symbols. Historically crafted with hand-spun wool and natural dyes, they are known for their durability and vibrant designs. Today, Soumak rugs are also woven in India, valued for their reversible construction and affordability, making them a practical yet stylish choice for modern interiors.
