Charcoal forms the dominant tone in this hand woven wool and cotton flatweave chevron rug, but it is the threads of blush, terracotta, and ivory woven through each zigzag band that give the palette its warmth and stop the rug from reading as simply dark. The chevron bands themselves have a fine internal texture built into the flatweave construction, so each row of the pattern carries detail at close range. That layering of pattern and texture within the same construction is a mark of considered hand weaving, and the wool and cotton combination ensures the flatweave holds its structure and surface integrity through long-term use. Ivory fringe along one end finishes the piece naturally. As colors can render differently depending on screen settings and device, the charcoal here sits in a warm dark gray register, the blush is a muted dusty rose, and the terracotta reads as a soft brick-red in most light conditions.

Story Behind the Art Bold, distinctive patterns; brilliant colors; affordability-these are some of the characteristics that explain the overwhelming popularity of the exquisite, flatwoven textiles from the Near and Far East known as kilims. Kilim designs are made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flatweave. Kilim patterns are created by winding the weft threads, which are colored, backwards and forwards around pairs of warp threads. The motifs on kilims woven in this way are constrained to be somewhat angular and geometric. Kilims are prized by collectors for the crispness of their decoration.
