Soft gray tones form the base of this 3 x 5 hand-knotted Peshawar rug, gently layered with washed shades of blue, aqua, moss, and beige. The low wool cut pile gives the surface a slightly worn look, a hallmark of traditional Peshawar weaving, where designs are intentionally relaxed and colors are subdued through careful dyeing and finishing. Floral and vine motifs unfold evenly across the field, framed by a narrow border that echoes the same muted earth tones without drawing attention away from the center. Originating from the Peshawar region, these rugs are known for blending Persian-influenced patterns with a lighter palette and softer texture, making them especially approachable for everyday interiors. Finished with a cotton foundation, this rectangular rug offers an easy introduction to oriental rugs for those who appreciate traditional design expressed in a more natural way.

Story Behind the Art: Hand-knotted rugs are Pakistan's second-largest cottage and small industry that began as early as the 11th century under the Mughal rule. The craftsmen have the capacity to produce any type of rug using all the popular motifs of guls, medallions, paisleys (botehs), traceries, and geometric designs in various combinations. While the "stone washes" are used to fade and soften colors, the Peshawar style is characterized by a thinly sheered pile, large print designs, and most predominantly, their antique ivory and sometimes golden tones.
