An exemplar of 18th-century French artistry, this 6x9 hand-knotted Savonnerie rug captures the essence of classical European design through a refined botanical motif and an intricate 300 KPSI weave. Crafted from fine wool on a cotton foundation, it features a low 0.30-inch cut pile that highlights its crisp detailing and sculptural precision. The composition features a soft ivory medallion encircled by baroque scrolls and floral garlands in blush, maroon, peach, and green which contrasts elegantly with a black and beige field. Designed to complement formal interiors, drawing rooms, or neoclassical spaces, it evokes the opulence of Parisian salons while maintaining timeless harmony. Its dense hand-knotting ensures longevity and clarity of pattern, making it both a collectible and a functional heirloom.

Story Behind the Art: The Savonnerie rugs have their origins in French pile floor coverings that were produced at the Savonnerie Manufactory, most prestigious factory of knotted pile rugs, that enjoyed its greatest period during 1650-1685. Today the name Savonnerie depicts the tradition of knotted pile Savonnerie rugs with their unique design and color schemata of essentially French designs, pictorial or armorial framed medallions, densely massed flowers in bouquets or leafy rinceaux against deep blue, black or deep brown grounds, within multiple borders. Further what distinguishes French Aubusson Savonnerie rugs is the technique of depth perspective that was invented by 17th century French artists and weavers whereby the patterns in the rug seem three dimensional. As such, Aubusson Rugs exhibit complex color patterns, symmetrical knots and flamboyant designs. Today, it is still possible to enjoy these rugs as they continue to be replicated in India, Pakistan, China.
