Bold geometry and bright color have made Kazak rugs a favorite for well over a century. Showcased here is a deep red field with a column of stepped, hooked diamond medallions in gold, sage and ivory, flanked by smaller navy diamonds and star-shaped rosettes. Half medallions in navy, ivory and green line both long sides. The design follows the tradition of the village weavers of the Caucasus, known for strong shapes and saturated dyes. An ivory border of cross-shaped flowers, between gold guard stripes, finishes this classic red tribal rug.

Story Behind the Art: Kazak rugs are well-recognized for their striking aesthetic, durability and highly saturated naturally dyed color tone. Originally woven by different tribes in the region of Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, Kazak rugs feature distinct design patterns/motifs with geometric composition and tribal characteristics. Common patterns include medallions, rosettes, hooked polygons, diamonds and crosses as well as representations of animals, birds, trees and humans. Today Kazak rugs that are made in Azerbaijan or in Iran or near the Caucasus Mountains are referred to as Caucasian Kazaks, and Kazak style rugs that are made in Afghanistan are referred to as Afghan Kazaks. Pakistan has also emerged as an important center for production of Kazaks in the modern times.
