Story Behind the Art: The Irish rug industry originated in the late 1800s when Morton & Company began producing rugs in Donegal, Ireland. The rugs produced in Donegal in the late 19th and early 20th century favored a design sensibility marked by highly decorative individual ‘Irish’ rendition of design motifs found in Oriental and Persian rugs as well as Celtic art tradition. Donegal rugs also incorporated elements from popular art movements of the time like Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau. With their expansive designs and singular style, Donegal rugs are priced for their versatality to suit diverse decore styles.
