Woven at an impressive 250 knots per square inch, this hand-knotted Kazak rug represents the geometric tribal tradition at its most technically accomplished, delivering both visual complexity and a velvet-soft silky sheen that elevates it well beyond standard pile construction. The rug features a deep sage green field anchored by a vertical series of large star medallions in warm amber gold and ivory, each one built from interlocking hexagonal and diamond forms with stepped angular edges that are the hallmark of classic Kazak draftsmanship. The medallions are not simply decorative objects placed on the field but active, layered compositions in their own right, their interiors filled with smaller geometric devices, cross forms, and rosettes in rust, blue, and rose that reveal increasing levels of detail the closer one looks. Between and around the medallions, the sage green ground carries scattered tribal motifs that maintain movement and energy across the open areas of the field without disrupting the dominance of the central layout. The ivory border presents a bold zigzag and stepped device pattern in green, gold, and rust, its wide format giving the frame considerable visual presence, while a lower register of stylized tree forms in ivory and blue adds an almost narrative quality to the bottom border band.

Story Behind the Art: Kazak rugs are well-recognized for their striking aesthetic, durability and highly saturated naturally dyed color tone. Originally woven by different tribes in the region of Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, Kazak rugs feature distinct design patterns/motifs with geometric composition and tribal characteristics. Common patterns include medallions, rosettes, hooked polygons, diamonds and crosses as well as representations of animals, birds, trees and humans. Today Kazak rugs that are made in Azerbaijan or in Iran or near the Caucasus Mountains are referred to as Caucasian Kazaks, and Kazak style rugs that are made in Afghanistan are referred to as Afghan Kazaks. Pakistan has also emerged as an important center for production of Kazaks in the modern times.
