Anchored in the nomadic weaving traditions of the eastern Caucasus, the 6'7" x 9'8" hand knotted wool Shirvan rug stands as a well preserved example of tribal geometric desig. Woven entirely from wool, including both pile and foundation, the rug features a low pile of approximately 0.30, a hallmark of Shirvan rugs that enhances pattern sharpness while ensuring durability. This piece retains strong color clarity and structural integrity, making it both a collectible and a functional interior element. The design is defined by a classic Shirvan geometric field, organized into vertical columns of elongated diamond medallions set against a saturated red ground. Each medallion is articulated in navy and deep blue, with interior detailing in turquoise, ivory, and blush, creating contrast and rhythm without visual clutter. The stepped edges, hooked motifs, and angular accents throughout the field reflect traditional tribal symbolism associated with protection, continuity, and balance. Surrounding the field, multiple guard and main borders introduce additional geometric elements of rosettes, latch hooks, and stylized animal forms rendered in navy, blue, red, and ivory, tightly framing the composition and reinforcing its architectural precision. The use of naturally aged dyes gives the palette a softened, cohesive appearance while preserving the rug’s tribal intensity.Well suited for living rooms, studies, or layered interiors, this Shirvan rug pairs beautifully with both traditional and eclectic spaces, offering visual energy without sacrificing authenticity or craftsmanship.

Story Behind the Art: Shirvan rugs are among the most revered and sophisticated examples of Caucasian weaving. Originating from the historical Shirvan region in modern day Azerbaijan, they are celebrated for their intricate geometric precision, fine knotting, and rich symbolic language. They often feature a series of central medallions (typically octagonal or star shaped) arranged vertically. Caucasian rugs are best known for featuring bold geometric and tribal designs in primary colors. The distinguishing aspect of the Caucasian carpet is its emphasis on rich and varied color. Visual balance is achieved by contrasting wildly different colors, rather than the more traditional approach of shading similar hues. All Caucasian rugs are made with the Turkish or Giordes knot and are considered village rugs and divided into subtypes according to their region of origin that range from Akstafa, Baku, Aghestan, Karabagh, to Kazak, Kuba, and Shirvan.
